The controversial Embakasi East MP, Babu Owino confessed that he drinks chang’aa, arguing that the law doesn’t forbid anyone from enjoying the brew.

“There is no law in this country that prohibits Kenyans from consuming chang’aa. People should be allowed to enjoy their favourite drinks,” Babu said.

He narrated that he started drinking chang’aa from a very early age because his mother was selling the brew in Kisumu to earn a living.

“I remember we struggled so much. My mum used to sell chang’aa and she raised us through that and up to now, I still drink chang’aa because that is where I came from. It wasn’t a bed of roses. Growing up in Nyalenda, times were hard as policemen would raid us and beat people in their houses. I would see my mum being whipped.

I slept in Kisumu’s central Police Station several times as I was, time and again arrested for selling chang’aa. That was the only means that I could use to raise school fees. But through God’s grace, I managed and at least I am where I am now,” he said.

Deputy President William Ruto admitted during former Minister Shoita Shitanda’s funeral that his father brewed chang’aa and busaa to raise money to educate him and his siblings.

He was quoted as saying: “Before he received salvation, my father’s home was brewing alcohol…but we don’t want to return to that path of brewing chang’aa and busaa for our children to get money for education.”

Former Kakamega senator Dr Bhoni Khalwale often praised his mother, Shinangoi, for educating him up to the level of a medical doctor from chang’aa proceeds.

He is well known within Kakamega for bailing out chang’aa brewers from police cells.

During Soita Shoitanda’s funeral, he said, “ Soita’s mother, Nasumbu in Butali village, brewed chang’aa whose proceeds educated Soita to become a minister.

My mother Shinangoi used proceeds from chang’aa to educate me to the level of a medical doctor."
