Three things you should keep in mind if you run into your ex

It can be so embarrassing [Photo: Courtesy]

After my boyfriend Joe and I broke up, I knew for a fact that I was going to run into him at some point.

That dreaded meeting was inevitable because we lived in close proximity to each other and frequented the same grocery stores, cafés and bars. For weeks after the break up, I anticipated this encounter.

I made sure I looked phenomenal every time I stepped out of the house. It didn’t matter whether I was going out to run errands or have coffee with my girls. I dressed to the nines with perfect hair and flawless makeup.

On the days when I thought I looked especially sensational, I deliberately went to places I thought he would be at like this cosy garden eatery he liked visiting for lunch or a quiet little café he liked working out of on days he didn’t feel like going to the office.

However, I never ran into him until one ill-fated morning.

I had just woken up and realized I had run out of milk. I decided to make a quick trip to the supermarket to get some milk and a few other items.

I was ravenous and I was only going to be out for a few minutes, so I didn’t see the need to get dressed up or put on makeup. It was early Saturday morning anyway. What were the odds that I would run into Joe?

To be on the safe side though, I decided to go to another smaller supermarket instead of the one I was used to. I pulled some jeans from the laundry hamper and threw on a T-shirt, jumped into my car and off I went to the supermarket.

I got to the supermarket and picked a shopping cart and was walking down the aisle when I turned a corner and like a bad dream, there he was; my ex Joe.

I was totally caught off guard. My first instinct was to run and hide, but it was too late because he had already seen me and was coming towards me.

My mind was racing and the emotions I had tried so hard to hide were rushing to the surface. He came over and said hi and asked me how I was doing.

I started blabbering, telling him how fantastic my life was and how I hadn’t felt that happy in ages.

I told him I was seeing someone new even though I wasn’t (and he hadn’t asked), making sure to throw in a little shade by telling him it was the best relationship I have ever had, and that it felt great to finally have a thoughtful and considerate boyfriend who treated me like a queen.

Eventually, he cut in on my babbling and told me he had to go. He said it was good seeing me and left, leaving me standing there feeling like a colossal idiot.

I am telling you this story because it contains everything you shouldn’t do when you run into an ex. I handled it so poorly that I cringe every time I think about it.

When you unexpectedly run into an ex, there are three things you should keep in mind: keep the conversation brief, don’t be petty and keep it real.

Don’t pretend to be living it up. People can see right through the act and you will come across as sad and pathetic. Secondly, no matter how much your ex hurt you, don’t use this opportunity to remind him of all the things he did wrong.

Lastly, keep the conversation brief. Exchange pleasantries then excuse yourself and leave. Hopefully, with these tips, you guys will have a much better run in with your exes than I did.
