A city court has sentenced a 37-year-old man to 15 years in jail after finding him guilty of defiling a minor.
Stephen Okonda was accused of defiling a 16-year-old girl on diverse dates between January 6 and February 14, 2014 in Njiru.
Okonda who lived in the same house with the family of the complainant, is said to have made several sexual advances at the young girl.
The court heard that Okonda often expressed his ‘undying love’ for the minor and even promised to marry her. He often gave her Sh200 as ‘proof’ of his love.
Okonda who is married, is said to have had sex with the girl mostly when other family members were away.
“The accused would open his door at around 12am, then move to the sitting room and signal her. PW1 (the minor) would go to his room and stay until 3am having sex,” read the judgment in part.
In court, the minor said she kept the whole incident a secret because the accused had warned her against telling anyone. She said she also remained tight-lipped since Okonda had also promised to marry her.
In the ruling, the trial magistrate said: “With certainty, the court reaches a finding that the totality of the evidence supports the charges and that the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. Consequently, the court convicts the accused of defilement.”
