Screening the siren: Who is Jacque Maribe?

Jacque Maribe

Grapevine had it that TV journalist Jacque Maribe was having a romantic affair with Dennis Itumbi, the Director of Digital Communication in the Office of the President.

Besides, the two are known to be quite close, long-term career friends who have never been shy to complement each other in public; whether having a social outing or simply making updates on their social pages.

The rumour got deeper and even caught public attention in December 2015 when Dennis walked into Jacque’s TV studios with a surprise birthday cake.

The episode was live on air, during the One O’clock news, with Dennis giving her the gift before extending a hug and walking out.

There was also a thread linking Jacque with comedian Eric Omondi after the two were spotted at a party joint.

However, come June 30 this year, a new twist was thrown into this rumour after a ‘stranger’, one Joseph Kuria Irungu surprised the world, and Jacque herself, by proposing to her.

Popularly known as ‘Jowie’ within his close circle of friends, the man went down on one knee during a surprise dinner he had set up for Jacque and her close circle of friends. She said ‘Yes’.

As social media went abuzz with the story of the day, Itumbi was among the first people to congratulate her and even went ahead to make light of the previous rumours of liaison with Jacque.

Itumbi: “May Laughter fill your path. May you live to enjoy life and share the beauty of your love with @jowie.jowi. Congratulations buddy!”

Maribe: “Thanks Dennis. I hear you are allegedly serving pilau soon and that you were allegedly linked to me.”

Itumbi: “@jacquemaribe am telling you. Niko kwa line-up au sio?”

Maribe: “Ebu we ask @jowie.jowi at this rate but seriously when will this joke that we were apparently a couple ever end?”

Itumbi: “When people create their own facts, believe them and keep a story going, so convinced about our alleged love and now its end… you just smile and live on.

“Now the current narrative is that you dumped me…if that is what it takes for people to let go the false hype so be it. Let’s accept you dumped me buddy. Now, let’s do justice to the moment. Congratulations my friend. It is about you. Congrats. I salute!”

And until Tuesday this week, Jacque, a mother of one, and her fiancé had kept off public limelight as the showbiz fraternity waited for the big day.

In fact, very little had been known about the man until he was linked with the murder of the 29-year-old Monicah Nyawira who was mysteriously killed in her Nairobi uptown house as she prepared to fly out to meet her South Sudanese fiancé in Dubai last week.

Sources who know Joe describe him as a happy soul, a businessman who is a lover of life.

“Joe is the happiest man you will ever meet. He is one open guy to his friends. He loves his business and his party life,” said our source of the guy who stole the screen siren’s heart.

Jacque attended State House Girls High School in Nairobi before she later joined the University of Nairobi to study Journalism.

Also an actress, she got a job at K24 where she was a reporter until December 2011, when she was employed as a Political Affairs Reporter at KISS TV before moving to Citizen TV the following year.

Last year Jacque was a recipient of a Head of State Commendation (HSC) civilian award from President Uhuru Kenyatta.
