A suspected ambulance thief was involved in an accident as he sped off.

The man took control of the ambulance at the emergency entrance of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) after it delivered a patient.

The ambulance belongs to a hospital in Uasin Gishu County.

Apparently, the ambulance driver was standing a few metres away from the vehicle waiting for the engine to cool before switching it off when the suspect jumped in and drove off.

“Since the vehicle was still on, I had not locked the doors but stood just a few metres from it. Out of nowhere, a man entered the ambulance and locked himself in before driving off,” said Paul Songok at Eldoret Central Police Station.

The speeding ambulance was involved in an accident with a fuel tanker at Marura, some 12 kilometres from Eldoret town. The suspect and tanker driver sustained injuries and were taken to MTRH.
