Sh5 million! Ugandan siblings win East Africa’s Got Talent, Museveni congratulates them

After six long months of intense competition, East Africa’s Got Talent Season 1 finally came to an end on Sunday with Ugandan siblings Esther and Ezekiel Mutesasira being crowned as the winners.

The duo who performed a moving rendition of Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey’s song, When You Believe, swept the judges and audience off their feet winning themselves the ultimate prize of Sh5 million.

Joining in celebrating their win was Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni who took to twitter to congratulate Esther and Ezekiel for the job well done.

“My grandchildren have told me about our talented bazukulu Esther and Ezekiel, who have won an East African Talent competition this evening. I am told they are very good singers. I congratulate them,” wrote Museveni.

Ugandan musician, actor and politician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine also commended the duo saying that he had personally followed the show and had been impressed by the sibling’s talent.

“I've personally watched and followed the #EAGT show but in bits because of busy schedules and I must say I was impressed by Esther and Ezekiel. You outdid yourself and the win was indeed well deserved. You made Uganda proud,” Said Bobi Wine.

Stiff competition

Competing against Esther and Ezekiel at the finals to were Janella Tamara from Kenya, Inteyoberana cultural troupe from Rwanda, Comedic Dance Group from Uganda, Jehovah Shalom Acapella from Uganda, Spellcast from Kenya and Dance Alliance Network from Uganda.

Before judges Jeff Koinange, Tanzania’s Vanessa Mdee, Rwanda’s DJ Contact Makeda and Uganda’s Gaetano Kagwa settled on the final six groups, the contestants had to go through weeks of rigorous evaluation.

The season which took place in Kenya was divided into four phases namely; Preliminary auditions held in major participating cities; Theatre auditions where contestants perform their acts and the judges rate them; Deliberations among the judges to come up with the best 18 contestants; Live shows where the final six contestants were chosen to proceed to the finale.
