The driver and conductor of a Githurai bus from which a man was pushed to his death last week have been detained as investigations continue.
The driver Naftally Kalama Fondo, 33, and his conductor, Alex Macau Gikonyo, 20, appeared before Chief Magistrate Hestone Nyaga on Friday.
The magistrate ordered that the two be detained for two weeks to give police time to complete investigations into the death of Gerald Kimondo.
A detective attached to Kasarani police division, in a sworn affidavit, said Mr Kimondo died on the spot after being pushed out of the speeding bus that was headed to the Nairobi central business district from Githurai.
The victim was crushed by the rear wheel.
“The incident happened on August 2 at Kastermill along the Thika superhighway. It was reported that the conductor escaped from the scene immediately after the fatal crash,” the affidavit partly reads.
Kimondo, according to the affidavit, was intentionally thrown out of the moving bus.
The investigating officer told the court that he needed to establish the cause of death by conducting further investigations.
In response, the driver, who did not object to the detective’s application said he was driving along the said road when he heard screams and also felt that the bus had become unstable.
The driver told court that it was then that he also realised he had run over someone.
The court allowed the application and the suspects are being held at Kasarani Police Station.
