It is suicidal - Ugandan tycoon's warning to Jose Chameleone

Uganda’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) Vice- Chairman (Eastern Region) Michael Mukula has warned veteran singer Jose Chameleone against following the footsteps of controversial Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine into politics.

According to the tycoon who at one time served as Uganda’s Health Minister, Chameleone’s announcement that he is taking a stab at the nation’s politics is suicidal.

Speaking to a local TV station in the country, Mukala warned that the Leone Island Empire music boss must tread carefully lest he loses it all.

“You risk eroding your financial base, politics can destroy you,” he said.

Mukala later posted, “My advice to my good friend Chameleone is, go slow on politics it will erode your entertainment career. Don’t say I didn’t advise you, take or leave it, experience has taught me."

Touted as the richest musician of his generation, the Afro-Beat singer and real estate mogul in April announced that he was eying Kampala’s Mayoral seat come 2021.

He explained that his decision was an answer to calls by residents for change in the city.

"I didn’t have this idea, but it started from the people of Kampala themselves especially the boda-boda riders who keep asking me to stand. They say I am the right person for the position.

“I want to make my contribution the same way Bobi Wine has made his contribution,” said Chameleone.

Speaking to allAfrica, Chameleone revealed that he is vying as an independent.

“I think it is my right to do that. As much as people have a right to vote, they also have a right to stand…If you observe, people are tired of the bickering in politics. Most people on particular tickets realise that the party they are standing for starts dictating the way they do their work.

"I am coming as an independent, although I would love to associate myself with all the parties around. People of late have put themselves on pressure - I am FDC, I am NRM, I am People Power - which is not healthy for our country.”

Michael Mukula represented Soroti Municipality in the Eastern Region of Uganda near Lake Kyoga from 2001 to 2016 and served as state minister of health from 2001 to 2006. He is a trained pilot and businessman.
