Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip and Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s daughter were injured following an attack by unknown people in Kasarani, Nairobi.

The incident happened on Sunday at about 2am at the Memphis Lounge - a popular club near the United States International University (USIU).

Loitiptip, 33, a first term legislator, had been with Agnes Saumu Mbuvi (pictured) when they were attacked by unknown men while leaving the club.

Police say they are holding a doorman in connection with the assault and are looking for eight other suspects.

Deep cuts

The senator sustained deep cuts in the head and was taken to the Aga Khan Hospital, where he is admitted.

Saumu told police she had been with the senator at the club on Saturday night watching the UEFA Champions League finals, and had excused herself to visit the washrooms when trouble began.

She said at the washrooms, she was confronted by a man who tore her blouse in the ensuing scuffle.

She told police she screamed and another person threw a stone at the bathroom.

Sustained injuries

Her attacker then fled into another room near the toilet. By then, the senator had been alerted of the incident and rushed in to rescue her.

“The man came out of the room and pleaded for forgiveness and I told Loitiptip to let him go,” said Saumu.

But as she and the senator walked to the parking lot at about 2.40am, they were attacked by about nine men in the company of the man from the bathroom incident.

She said the gang wrestled the senator to the ground and clobbered him on the head with clubs.

Saumu told police in her statement that she tried to protect Loitiptip from the beating and sustained injuries on her right hand in the process.

The gang then fled, leaving the two bleeding.

Saumu said she called her cousin and step-sister, who helped her take the legislator to hospital.

It is not clear whether the senator and Sonko’s daughter, who runs businesses in the city, are in a relationship.

Police visited the scene and arrested one doorman, who they suspected was involved in the fracas.

Kasarani Police Boss Peter Kimani said they were looking for eight other suspects in connection with the incident.

Later, the Senator’s handlers released photos of him lying in hospital before and after he was treated. They said he was admitted in the hospital’s ICU.

It is also not clear if the men knew Sonko’s daughter prior to the brawl and if she knew them.

Police said they were waiting to question the senator once he recovers. They have so far interrogated guards at the club.

“We want to know why all the drama happened. Investigations are ongoing and we are holding a suspect,” said Mr Kimani.

Sonko said he could not comment on adult issues. He said he would wait to see the way investigations go.
