Veteran Kenyan rapper Jua Cali has narrated how an unscrupulous promoter swindled him of his hard earned cash in Busia.

Responding to Willy .M. Tuva as to whether he has ever reached a point of giving up in music, Jua Cali disclosed that he has never but was at one time pained at the Kenya -Uganda border.

According to Jua Cali, the promoter started taking him in circles as soon as the self-proclaimed King of Genge set foot in Busia and demanded to get his full pay.

“Nilikua nimeenda show. Busia unajua iko kwa border. Kabla ya show ikakua lazima umaliziwe deposit, kama kawaida. Ikawa huyo jamaa yuko pigeni show buda hakuna noma. Club imejaa tulia, maliza show ntakulipa usiogope". Tukapiga show, said Jua Cali.

Hiding on the premise that the club was not full, the promoter told Jua Cali that he would be paid the remainder as soon as he performs.

But on performing, the promoter again negated on the pledge and instead requested that Jua Cali retires to bed as he collects gate fees.

“Baada ya show Jamaa akakua sasa “unajua mlango bado watu wanaingia. Ni mahesabu sasa. Nyinyi endeni tu mulale. Nitakuja kukuamsha nikupatie pesa yako.” Tukasema ni sawa haina noma club ilikua imejaa.”

While they slept, the promoter fled to Uganda.

“Msee, niliamka asubuhi jamaa hakuja kuniamsha. Najaribu kumpigia simu ni 'mteja wa nambari hapatikani kwa sasa'. Kumbe alienda Uganda. Alitoroka hio asubuhi na pesa."

Eldoret Express

Jua Cali went on, “Sasa ikabidi mdosi wa club aka amka. Ata aliamshwa na masimu akiambiwa wale wasanii wako bado wako hapa hawajalipwa. Akakuja kwa club akasema, “bahati mbaya contract haikuwa between yeye na promoter. Lakini mimi ile kitu nitafanya nitawapatia bus fare ya Eldoret Express murudi Nairobi.”

The Ngeli Ya Genge hitmaker highlighted that the experience taught him a valuable lesson on understanding that music is a business and the need to demand money up front.

Hii ni biashara. Hakikisha tu jamaa amekulipa kabla upande stage kwa sababu uko hapo already. Jamaa tu akupe pesa yako,” the rapper concluded.
