Kenyans ask for proof after Itumbi says Ruto has honoured Sh50 million Harambee Stars pledge

On Tuesday, Dennis Itumbi announced that DP William Ruto has honored a pledge he made to Harambee Stars.

"If you qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, the Government will give you Sh50 million,” the DP promised the stars in August 2018.

However, speaking to journalists in February 2019, Sports Principal Secretary Kirimi Kaberia could not confirm whether the Sh50 million was part of the Sh242 million set aside for Harambee Stars’ Afcon preparations.

“I have not checked the budget to see what items have been entered, so I am not in a position to tell whether the Sh50 million is part of this particular allocation or not,” he said.

According to Itumbi, the DP has lived up to his words and handed over the cash to the team.

“Keeping the Promise: Harambee stars gets the cash promised by DP @WilliamsRuto for qualifying to play at the Africa Cup of Nations. I wish Harambee stars well as they prepare for the tournament,” he tweeted.

However, cynical Kenyans were not buying Itumbi’s story as some asked for proof of the claim.

Weeks ago, Itumbi was forced to issue an apology after erroneously reporting that the DP’s wife Rachel Ruto had donated food to starving Turkana residents.

Keen Kenyans pointed out that the photos used by Itumbi were the exact images shared by Rachel Ruto on April 2, 2014.
