A mother from Terra Bora area, Garissa County, has sent shock waves in the locale. This after it emerged that she married off her nine-year-old daughter to get money to feed her other children.
Police have since arrested the mother and are searching for the man reported to have married the Class Four pupil, forcing her to drop out of Masalani Primary School in Ijara sub-county.
Confirming the incident, Masalani Police Station’s Chief Inspector John Munyalo said the culprit, Mahboub Adam Dahir, has gone into hiding and is still at large.
Several people, including the suspect’s mother and others who are said to have been involved in the issue, have recorded statements with the police. The girl, name withheld, has also recorded a statement.
Local reports show that marrying off school-going girls for financial gains is on the rise, with the men keeping such marriages a secret.
Terra Bora Chief Yasin Farah told those who might have eloped with school pupils or are involved in female genital mutilation that they will be arrested.
He also appealed to residents to volunteer information to security agencies on such malpractices in the community for prompt action to be taken against such violators of the law.
He appealed to political leaders in the region to be on the forefront as change agents in sensitising the communities in North Eastern counties against outdated cultural practices.
