Stray lion kills primary school pupil in Taita-Taveta

“The lion invaded one of the households and went from room to room attacking people"

A primary school pupil was last Thursday attacked and killed while dozens of other villagers sustained seriously injuries when a stray lion invaded a village in Maungu Township.

The Class Seven Marasi primary school girl met her death as she went home from a trading centre in the town along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Senior Kenya wildlife Service (KWS) personnel and Ndovuni villagers said the lion invaded a household and attacked villagers.

“The lion invaded one of the households and went from room to room attacking people. The deceased is a Class Seven pupil. We are now living in fear,” a villager said.

According to villagers and KWS officials, two couples were among victims attacked and seriously injured by the lion.

The victims were rushed to Voi County Referral Hospital where they were admitted in critical condition.

Marungu Ward Representative Paul Kang’ethe identified the deceased as Asha Mohammed, aged 14.
