2018 was a year of many firsts in Kenya’s entertainment industry. A year which saw the showbiz scene open up and propel new talents from various sectors to instant, national celebrity status.

However, 2018 was also a sizzling bag of jaw dropping drama.

Caught in the winding web of fame, many celebrities were like moths to light. Their 'private' lives were suddenly thrust open to the prying public, spicing up each month with mouthwatering juice.

Here are a few;

Dancehall king Redsan was on everyone’s lips during the month of September after he descended on his producer, Sappy, with slaps.

The ‘Shoulder Back’ hit maker stormed Sappy’s studio where an argument reportedly ensued over royalties from the singer’s much anticipated album, ‘The Baddest.’

“On Sunday, Redsan called me but I did not receive his calls as I was out of town. I travelled back to Nairobi on Monday. Come Monday, he caught me off-guard as he showed up at my studio demanding to know why I did not receive his calls. Nikamuuliza ni nini bro? Mbona wakuja hivi? Sijapokea simu ni simu yangu, naeza pokea ama nisipokee,”said Sappy.

An audio of the two arguing before the sound of a slap was heard, went viral minutes after it made way to social media.

The producer did not press charges.

Jacque Maribe

The month of September was also an unforgettable month for Citizen TV journalist Jacque Maribe after she was arrested in connection with the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.

The TV anchor found herself in the dock alongside her fiancé Joseph ‘Jowie’ Irungu as detectives tried to piece together the gruesome murder of Kimani at Lamuria Gardens, Kitale Lane, off Denis Pritt Road.

Kimani's body was found in a bathtub with her throat slit.

Maribe was later released on a cash bail of Sh1 million or a bond of Sh2 million. Jowie on the other hand was, however, denied bail.

Asbel Kiprop

August was Asbel Kiprop’s month.

This was after a video emerged online of the three-time world champion groping a woman in his car.

Believed to be a former MCA aspirant in Uasin Gishu County, the woman was taped in a fully unbuttoned blouse which exposed her bra while seductively dancing before passionately kissing the athlete.

The 1500 meters champion admitted to cheating and blamed his mpango for all his troubles.

“I am coming out clean to expose this woman who is like a bad omen to my career. Her entry into my life saw good fortunes fly out away and the negatives have been like a shadow to me,” he told GameYetu.

When the story broke, she attempted to commit suicide by swallowing pesticide at her house in Kuinet, Eldoret.

Doreen Gatwiri

The month of March belonged to TV siren Doreen Gatwiri.

Gatwiri was in the news after she made a shocking plea on social claiming that her life was in danger, accusing her husband Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi of physically assaulting her.

“Writing this with a lot of fear. My life is in danger. This evening at about 9.50pm my husband Mwingi Central Member Of Parliament Gideon Mulyungi assaulted me at our Karen Home and I sustained head injuries at the back of my ear resulting to my left ear going numb,” she wrote on Twitter.

She claimed that Mulyungi was abusive and that she had sustained injuries from the assault in a report she made at Hardy Police Station under OB number 36.

Betty Kyallo versus Susan Keittany

The business fallout between K24 anchor Betty Kyallo and lawyer Susan Keittany in February was one for the books.

The two former partners were reportedly embroiled in an ugly catfight over the control of their luxury salon, Posh Palace, which ultimately saw the celebrated anchor move out.

Kyallo walked away, yes, but with her cards held on her chest. Days later, she emerged and set up shop next door with a new brand, Flair by Betty.

David The student

Popular comedian David The Student made headlines in August after several individuals came forward accusing him of being a con.

The saga started after Kenyans in the USA, put him on the spot saying he was giving residents "a hard time in the diaspora."

One Frank Njoroge claimed that David had obtained money by false pretense claiming his father was battling cancer.

“Comedian David the Student has taken money from our pockets in pretense of either his dad is sick of cancer, his relatives hospitalized in a coma and so many other things. I introduced him to the owner of Rafikiz Restaurant in Seattle to host him after he fell out with his promoter Steve Mbugu,” alleged Frank.

The comedian later issued an apology.

“I have never told anyone my Dad has cancer. Coming here(America) made me realize life here aint what we see and think there’s a dollar tree falling and people catch…I apologies to anybody and everyone those I borrowed and those who lent me and I’ve not refunded. I take full responsibility and I am ashamed” he wrote.

Rugby players in trouble for raping singer

April was a scrum, the rugby world took over.

Kenya Sevens stars Frank Wanyama and Alex Olaba were walking a tight rope after singer Wendy Kemunto accused the two of rape.

Kemunto claimed that the two Harlequins players gang-raped her on her birthday in an apartment in Highrise Estate, Nairobi, and got her pregnant.

They were arrested and arraigned in court where they denied the charges claiming that the sex was consensual.

Vera Sidika and Otile Brown

In October, Vera Sidika and Otile Brown showed the world how vicious breakups can get when things go south.

The blossoming relationship between the popular socialite-cum-entrepreneur and the singer took a sharp nose dive that month, surprising many.

With the relationship dead, all masks were off and the floodgates of insults between the two former lovers opened wide, revealing how tumultuous it had been.

Vera claimed that the Chaguo la moyo singer was a leech, living off her and that the relationship was dead from the word go after he started asking for money.

A position refuted by Otile who said that he had only requested for a loan and planned to pay back.

He claimed in one of his many responses that the reason for the breakup was about Vera’s push for marriage and pregnancy.
