The burial of slain Rongo University student Sharon Otieno will cost over Sh1 million but the target is yet to be achieved, her family revealed.

According to funeral committee Chairman Elijah Opiyo, the bill is over the roof due to large number of mourners expected to throng the funeral.

“We expect large number of mourners that is why we are calling on well-wishers to chip in to enable us have a dignified send-off for our daughter,” he said

Opiyo hinted that other expenses ballooning the costs include mortuary charges, cost of buying a coffin, food and refreshments for mourners.

“We have not hit the target to cater for the burial expenses and we are appealing to well-wishers to assist us,” Opiyo said.

Sharon will be buried at her grandfather’s home in line with Luo traditions as her ex-husband had not paid dowry.

She will be buried next to the grave where her foetus was interred three weeks ago.

Her body will leave Kirindo mortuary in Mbita on October 18 and buried a day later in Homabay town.

Sharon and Nation journalist Mr Barrack Oduor were kidnapped moments after being lured out of Graca Hotel in Rongo.

Migori Governor Okoth Obado and his co-accused Michael Oyamo were later arrested in connection with her murder and are still in police custody pending investigations.
