Former Nairobi Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe could make a comeback to the corporate scene after his short stint as Nairobi Deputy Governor.

According to sources, the Equity Group board is set to meet tomorrow morning to approve his appointment as the Equity Group Chief Commercial Officer.

It is understood that he has been offered the job to spearhead the commercial strategy and development of the group.

If confirmed, this would put an end to speculation linking Igathe (pictured) with several companies since resigning from the county job in January. Efforts to get a comment from Equity on the matter were fruitless.

But during the lender’s annual general meeting, Equity Group Chief Executive James Mwangi downplayed the possibility of the former Vivo Energy boss joining the lender when The Standard inquired about it.

Instead, he said Igathe joined the high table as “a good friend” as well as a “big shareholder” in the bank. “I am not aware of it. People don’t join unless with approval from Central Bank of Kenya (CBK). A process of somebody joining the bank is rigorous," he told The Standard.

“There is a process called fit-and-proper review. You do that to get approval and that’s when you can join,” Mr Mwangi said.

Mwangi, however, praised the former deputy governor’s credentials, saying he was qualified to hold any top position in any organisation.
