How I met Margaret Kenyatta: Kenyans react to Uhuru’s revelation

On 8 March during the International Women’s day, President Uhuru Kenyatta, in a rare gesture opened up on how he met First Lady Margaret Kenyatta.

According to President Uhuru, he was out swimming with his dad Jomo Kenyatta when he met a young Margaret.

President Uhuru revealed that it was his father who encouraged him to speak to Margaret, consequently ending up in marriage.

“I first met Margaret when I was out swimming with my father and he nudged me to befriend her” stated President Uhuru.

“I have now known her for most of my life. She is my friend, partner and strong supporter. Strong and successful women make a strong and successful Kenya” added President Uhuru.

President Uhuru and First Lady Margaret are blessed with three children, Jomo, Jaba and Ngina.

Margaret, an alumnus of Kianda School is the daughter of the late Dr Njuguna Gakuo, the first African managing director of Kenya Railways, taking over from GPG Mackay in 1964.
