Jubilee MP condemns CS Matiang’i over police brutality

A Jubilee Party MP has condemned acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i for police brutality against protesters agitating for electoral reforms.

Joshua Kutuny (Cherangany) said yesterday excessive police force and a ban on protests portrayed President Uhuru Kenyatta as supporting dictatorship.

Mr Kutuny reminded Dr Matiang’i that picketing and demonstrations were provided for in the law and nobody could purport to ban them.

“Some of us come from a metropolitan region. The ongoing shootings of demonstrators do not augur well for the country and the communities living in metropolitan areas,” he said.

Kutuny's remarks contradict those made by Uhuru and his deputy William Ruto, who have supported Matiang’i's efforts to contain protesters they accuse of destruction and looting.

The MP, who served as Uhuru's political adviser until his election, said brutalising Opposition supporters was working against Jubilee's efforts to gain support in some areas.

"Such brutality will help the Opposition win sympathy from the international community and human rights bodies."
